The History of Espresso Coffee “made in Italy”
now protagonist at Aliment & Attrezzature 2007 – Centro Fiera Montichiari (Bs)
At the 20th edition of the Trade Fair "Aliment & Attrezzature" taking place in Brescia from 18th to 21st of February, the old ladies of the Exhibition Espresso made in Italy: history, culture and design will parade together in what is considered as the unique Italian collection of vintage coffee machines - telling the evolution of espresso bar coffee machines from technology to design.
The Exhibition is hosted at Pavilion 8, and is open from 10 am to 8 pm.
Espresso coffee and its fascinating history will join the Trade Fair “Aliment & Attrezzature”, a 4-day event devoted to the products of excellence of the Italian food and agricultural industry, and to the agricultural equipment and machinery - this year the trade fair is at its 20th edition and is hosted at the Centro Fiera Montichiari from 18th to 21st of February.

During the event, visitors will have the opportunity of running through the history of one of the world best-known "markets” of made-in-Italy design - that is coffee machine design - thanks to the fascinating Exhibition Espresso made in Italy: history, culture and design. This temporary Exhibition will show twenty selected espresso coffee machines all manufactured between 1901 and present day. These machines belong to Enrico Maltoni’s Private Collection. Mr. Maltoni is an enthusiast collector of espresso coffee machines and has been engaged in the collection of technical documents, advertising material and in the realization of a rich photographic archive for over 20 years. Thanks to the sponsorship of the Province of Brescia, Lavazza, Rancilio and “Eat a Cup”, it will be possible to go back in time up to the origins of bar espresso coffee through the exhibition of 20 models. The visit will start from the first legendary coffee machines “column-shaped”, such as La Pavoni of 1905 and Snider of 1920 – in perfect Art Nouveau style -, and will continue with the coffee machine models Rancilio Preziosa of 1930 and Z8 of 1971 – bearing the name of Marco Zanuso -, the Pavoni Concorso model of 1956 – designed by Bruno Munari and Enzo Mari -, and, finally, the San Marco coffee machine of 1952, nicknamed “Lollobrigida” for its soft lines and its rounded shape. The visit itinerary will then conclude with the present-day Rancilio model Classe 10 and with the futuristic B.L.U.E. LB 1000 (Best Lavazza Ultimate Espresso) designed by Pininfarina, both representing the ultimate evolution and the future of espresso coffee machines.
Each coffee machine will come with a Lavazza vintage set of cups.

The Trade Fair will host great names of the culinary art, such as the chefs Gianfranco Vissani and Gualtiero Marchesi, and important side initiatives, such as the Italian Barmen Championship at the stand Tris Moka (pavilion 8). The competition will start on Sunday 18th at 2.00 pm, and will continue on Monday 19th at the same time. The final will take place on Tuesday 20th with the match between the 5 barmen who have passed the first match. The winner will be proclaimed at 2.30 pm and will get the title to enter the National Championship (CIBC) at the Trade Fair Pianeta Birra programmed to take place on 2008 in Rimini. Among other technical judges and tasters, the competition jury in Brescia will also see the participation by the collector Enrico Maltoni, who is considered an expert of espresso coffee as well as an enthusiast of this beverage.
At the exhibition, visitors will also have the opportunity of reading and buying the second edition of the book entitled Espresso made in Italy 1901-1962, the first world publication on the history of espresso coffee machines.
