LUIGI COMENCINI (1916)
Cinema director, he was born in Salò (Italy) in 1916, put aside his university degree in architecture and started working as a journalist and critic. After a stay in France, he directed “Proibito rubare”, fully neorealistic. His following tries, even though neorealistic-based, are diluted in a more amusing and folk atmosphere (“Pane, amore e fantasia” of 1953 and Pane, amore e gelosia of 1954). After “Everybody go home!” – “Tutti a casa!” (1960) and “Il commissario” (1962), he directed “La ragazza di Bube” (1964) and “Incompreso” (1967). Among his most successful works of those years is “Casanova” – “Infanzia, vocazione, prime esperienze di Giacomo Casanova, veneziano” (1969) and, in the satirical and costume comedy, “Lo scopone scientifico” (1972) with Bette Davis.
After Delitto d'amore (1974), he directed a satirical comedy titled “Mio Dio come sono caduta in basso!” (1974).
For television, he directed Le avventure di Pinocchio in 1971. After the thriller “La donna della domenica” (1976) and “Il gatto” (1978), Comencini directed one of his best movies: “L'ingorgo”, of 1979, a paradoxical and emblematic movie.
In 1980 he directed “Voltati, Eugenio”, where he deals with childhood again, with the story of a modern pair. In 1982 he carried out a personal interpretation of the Gospel with the movie “L’imposteur” – “Cercasi Gesù”, featuring the comic actor Beppe Grillo. In 1983 he directed the TV adaptation “Cuore” taken from Edmondo de Amicis’ novel, and in 1985 he directed a TV adaptation taken from Elsa Morante’s “Storia”. His movie Ragazzo di Calabria, of 1987, was very successful. His latest work is “Marcellino pane e vino” of 1991. |
