As origens
O ritual cotidiano do café. O amor pela bebida negra tem raízes na Etiópia e atinge o Ocidente somente em 1500. A partir dali, a paixão só aumentou. Cresceu, envolvendo empresas e designers, até sair da esfera do preparo caseiro e ganhar definitivamente os locais públicos, com as máquinas de café profissionais.
A idéia
Enrico Maltoni, grande apaixonado, estudioso e colecionador de máquinas de café antigas, depois de mais de 15 anos de pesquisa, reconstruções e restauros, cria a primeira mostra mundial dedicada à história e ao design destas verdadeiras ‘damas’ do café. Retoma, dessa forma, uma meada da história que retrata tanto o estilo de vida, quanto os eventos e os traços culturais desde 1900 até 2004. |

Origins
The daily ritual of drinking coffee and the love of this black drink has its roots in Ethiopia and was introduced to the west in 1500. Since then enthusiasm for coffee has never abated. In fact it captured the imagination of companies, designers and the public at the beginning of the last century when it came out of the home and invaded an ever-growing number of public venues.
The idea
Following over 15 years of research, finds and subsequent restorations Enrico Maltoni, enthusiast, scholar and collector of antique coffee machines, created the first exhibition in the world dedicated to the history and design of the “ladies” of coffee, rebuilding a narrative thread between style, events and culture from the beginning
of the 18th century to 2004. |

A exposição
O acervo para mostras é composto por 25 máquinas originais, algumas delas exemplares únicos. Na área expositiva, cada máquina è colocada sobre um pedestal iluminado, e vem acompanhada de descrição técnica, de uma ficha com os acontecimentos históricos relacionados à época e ainda de cartazes publicitários antigos. Além disso, a mostra exibe dois vídeos em continuação: um documentário que traz a história da evolução das máquinas de café expresso apresentado por Enrico Maltoni, e um apanhado de uma série de trechos de filmes célebres que ilustram um século de café e cinema.
Design e cultura
As ‘damas’ do café trazem a assinatura dos mais importantes arquitetos do design italiano: de Giò Ponti a Enzo Mari, de Bruno Munari a Achille Castiglioni. E o acervo de colecionador representou apenas a deflagração de um projeto muito maior nas atividades de Enrico Maltoni. A coleção particular, o museu permanente, o longo trabalho de reflexão, pesquisa histórica e consultoria deram origem ao livro “Espresso Made in Italy” e a um site extremamente rico e detalhado, um projeto que corre paralelamente ao da mostra itinerante.

The exhibition
The show is made up of 25 original pieces (in some cases with the only remaining examples): each machine is exhibited in its own space on an illuminated pedestal with a technical and stylistic description, historical notes on important events in that century and in many cases original design drawings and advertising posters. Additionally there is a continuous showing of two videos, one on the history of coffee machines presented by Enrico Maltoni and the other on the most famous films illustrating a century of coffee in the cinema.
Design and culture
The “ladies” of coffee machines were produced by the most important Italian designers from Gio Ponti to Enzo Mari and from Bruno Munari to the Castiglioni brothers. The exhibition represents an important aspect of a cultural project that stretches much further than Enrico Maltoni’s own personal contribution.
There is a private collection, a museum, a book entitled ‘Espresso Made in Italy’ resulting from years of historic reflection and information (and also part of the exhibition) and a rich and detailed website, all making up |

Quem é Enrico Maltoni
A idéia da mostra itinerante foi elaborada por Enrico Maltoni, italiano de Forlimpopoli, que há alguns anos comprou, num ‘mercadão de pulgas’, sua primeira máquina de café antiga. A paixão se fortaleceu, ele comprou outros exemplares e tornou-se o maior colecionador de máquinas de café expresso do mundo. Estudioso escrupuloso até dos aspectos históricos conjunturais, científicos e técnicos das máquinas, Maltoni conseguiu descobrir, de cada um dos modelos, o produtor, o projetista e o período, reconstruindo dessa forma, através dos modelos, o fio da história do design e dos costumes italianos no século XX.

Who is Enrico Maltoni?
The idea of an exhibition on the move was developed by Enrico Maltoni, an Italian from Forlimpopoli. He is an enthusiastic collector who started off a few years ago by buying his first coffee machine at a flea market, followed by many others, until he became the biggest collector in the world. Carefully studying all the historical, scientific and technical aspects, Maltoni managed to date each model back to the producer, designer and period, rebuilding the history of design and Italian customs throughout the century through the various models. |

O livro
A idéia de realizar o livro “Espresso Made in Italy” nasceu do esforço e da paixão de colecionismo de Enrico Maltoni. Mais de 200 imagens acompanhadas de fichas técnicas percorrem a história italiana do café expresso de bar. Assunto pouco explorado mas muito importante para as mudanças evolutivas do design, as máquinas de café expresso reunidas no livro acabam ajudando a tecer um panorama evolutivo dos costumes e hábitos da história do café e da sociedade italiana através do século XX.

The book
The above resulted in the need to collect ideas, history, images and projects together and publish them in a book called Espresso Made in Italy, overseen by the collector himself. Over 200 images taken from technical records reproduce the Italian history of espresso in bars. In the coffee machine field, definitely unexplored compared to many others but nevertheless of enormous interest, the phenomenon itself, the evolution of design and the customs of coffee drinkers all go to make up a story that traces the development of the last century. |

Hoje, a máquina de café expresso também tem seu museu virtual. Aqui neste site, os modelos mais importantes construídos em solo italiano são ilustrados e descritos em cada detalhe. Even the espresso coffee machine now has its own virtual museum.The most important models built in Italy are all here, described and illustrated in minute detail. By turning the site’s pages we discover an extensive gallery of images starting with the registration of the first steam coffee machine’s patent by Luigi Bezzera from Milan in November 1901. Then there is the Castiglioni brothers’ Cimbali Pitagora, winner of the Compasso d’Oro (the most prestigious Italian award for design) in 1962, the Liberty-style Victoria Arduino from 1910 and Gio Ponti’s Gaggia and Pavoni. Three recent sections complete the site: Coffee and Cinema, with images from the videos in the exhibition,Words to Coffee, verses on the subject of the intense aroma, and Club “Espresso”. |

Com a preciosa colaboração da Cinemateca de Bolonha, foi realizada uma montagem de vídeo de 30 minutos que, em exibição contínua, enriquece a mostra com imagens retiradas de filmes célebres ilustrados com a presença de máquinas de café expresso em suas tramas. Do famoso Rick’s Café de “Casablanca” à cafeteria multi-étnica alienígena de “Guerra das Estrelas”, das histórias de Charles Chaplin a Eduardo De Filippo, de Kubrick a Olmi, de Comencini a Pasolini, de Fellini a Truffaut, de Jean-Luc Godard a Billy Wilder. Não só atores acostumados a tomar o café expresso nos bares, mas também flashes de história que revelam os cafés mais famosos do Velho Continente junto às máquinas de café antigas que se destacam em cima do balcão.
O segundo vídeo traz Enrico Maltoni que, passeando entre os vários modelos, conta a história das máquinas de café expresso produzidas na Itália. Uma ótima escola para aprender tudo sobre as fascinantes ‘damas’ do café.

Two filmed documents
With a valuable contribution from Bologna’s Cineteca a continuous projection montage video lasting 30 minutes
has been made as part of the exhibition, with scenes from well-known films around the world that include espresso coffee. From the famous Rick’s Café in Casablanca to the alien cafés of Star Wars, from Charles Chaplin, Eduardo De Filippo, Kubrick, Olmi, Comencini, Pasolini and Fellini to Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard to Billy Wilder.
And it’s not just actors who are recorded drinking espresso at a bar - there are also historic moments that took place in the most famous European cafés with the antique machines on the counters.
The second video included in the exhibition recounts the history of coffee machines in the words of Enrico Maltoni who illustrates the history of each model as he walks among them, including their technique, design and restoration. It is an excellent way of learning all about the
stiff and fascinating world of the “ladies” of coffee. |
